Biographie
Saluée par la critique comme étant « précise et capable d’une projection intense » et faisant preuve du « plus haut niveau d’aptitude », la pianiste nippo-canadienne Yoko Hirota est considérée comme l’une des interprètes les plus en vue de sa génération dans le domaine du répertoire contemporain pour piano.
Yoko a reçu son doctorat en interprétation pianistique sous la direction de Louis-Philippe Pelletier à l’Université McGill. De surcroît, des bourses du Conseil des Arts du Canada ont permis à Mme Hirota d’étudier en Europe auprès d’interprètes réputés du répertoire contemporain pour piano, notamment Gabor Eckhardt en Hongrie, avec Herbert Henck en Allemagne et avec Florent Boffard en France.
Championne de la musique contemporaine, Yoko Hirota s’est produite en récital comme soliste ou chambriste pour le compte de grandes organisations ou à des festivals, notamment: New Music Concerts à Toronto, Discovery Series de l’Université de Calgary, le Windsor Canadian Music Festival, le Festival de musique international du Domaine Forget, Innovations en concert à Montréal, le Festival international de musique de chambre d’Ottawa, la série Friday Evenings at the Rolston au Banff Centre et à la Chapelle Historique du Bon Pasteur à Montréal. Mme Hirota a été invitée par le réputé Nouvel Ensemble Moderne (NEM) à donner la création canadienne d’une œuvre exigeante, Joy (pour 23 musiciens et bande) du célèbre compositeur finlandais Magnus Lindberg. Le quotidien montréalais The Gazette a fait l’éloge de son interprétation.
Yoko Hirota a eu de nombreuses radiodiffusions de ses exécutions sur les ondes de la Société Radio-Canada, et a reçu des bourses du Conseil des arts de l’Ontario et du Conseil des Arts du Canada. À l’édition 1996 du Concours de piano Clara Liechtenstein (Montréal), une Mention spéciale a été créée spécialement pour souligner son excellence dans l’interprétation du répertoire du vingtième siècle. En 2013, elle a été invitée à jouer au 16e gala des prix Opus.
Yoko a réalisé trois CD solos, et son plus récent, “Voces Boreales” (Centredisques), rendu possible grâce au Conseil des arts de l’Ontario, a reçu des critiques élogieuses du Wholenote, Musical Toronto, et du Globe and Mail.
Yoko Hirota est actuellement professeur de piano à l’Université Laurentienne de Sudbury, en Ontario. Elle est aussi cofondatrice et codirectrice artistique des 5-Penny New Music Concerts.
